Recommends it for: people who never learned phonics and are still curious, new teachers
This book was fascinating to me. In offset form a skilful reader reads 1900 words a week while a bad reader only reads 16! (Don't quote me on that, but information technology is something to that upshot). I'm sure this book was written just for new teachers although information technology is a very accessible volume and didn't feel very academic. As someone who didn't larn phonics as a kid and hardly learned to read at all in schoolhouse this volume answered so many questions I've had for a long fourth dimension. As someone who didn't learn phonics every bit a child and inappreciably learned to read at all in schoolhouse this book answered and so many questions I've had for a long time. At that place were a ton of things I didn't know, and as well much to recollect from but one reading. At that place were tidbits on simply virtually every letter of the alphabet, a break downwards of the likely hood a "rule" is right, and lists and list of words for kids. Information technology was like shooting fish in a barrel to become the large moving-picture show on how kids should larn to read and how to evaluate and help them along (at least in theory). I only accept one kid, who has not shown any trouble with reading, and so I pretty much read it for myself. Fifty-fifty so I would recommend it to a curious parent to bank check it out of the library as there are some good games similar the "give-and-take ladder" by Timothy Rasinski which is a fun fiddling puzzle covering and then many of the skills kids need to practice. And not that I imaging many people would make this mistake, but the author mentions that reading the same text multiple times is good for a number of reasons, which I did not know. I had been trying to find new books all the time because my child would memorize stories the commencement time we read them. His preschool instructor had told me he could read, but in my listen I thought, oh she doesn't know how many of those stories he can tell without the book. I didn't want to read the aforementioned thing with him because I didn't think he could learn to read if he had already memorized a book. Now I feel kind of like a jerk every bit it seems obvious that is a really good way to larn equally something becomes more than and more familiar. Practise makes perfect, correct? ...more

Phonics A-Z gives a summary of phonics and teaches the nuts of phonics awareness. It gives practical suggestions for phonics lessons and gives special instruction for struggling readers and ELL students. At that place are set up to use lesson plans, games and learning eye ideas. For those teachers that work with struggling readers, this book helps to explain the reasons behind our phonics rules which in turn made information technology easier for me to explicate why letters make the sounds they practice in a give-and-take. The book is Phonics A-Z gives a summary of phonics and teaches the basics of phonics awareness. Information technology gives practical suggestions for phonics lessons and gives special instruction for struggling readers and ELL students. There are ready to use lesson plans, games and learning center ideas. For those teachers that piece of work with struggling readers, this volume helps to explain the reasons behind our phonics rules which in turn fabricated it easier for me to explain why letters make the sounds they do in a discussion. The volume is geared toward elementary, only I think all teachers could benefit from the ideas in this book. ...more

This is a decent summary of phonics and has some nifty discussion lists. My favorite section is the discussion of how often the phonics "rules" we teach students are actually correct. "When two vowels go walking the first one does the talking" only true almost 40% if the time! Great reminder to be thoughtful in our teaching practices! The newest version (2017) is a great introduction to how we tin can think about phonics instruction, some games and activities to do with kids (beyond worksheets!), and some strategies to problem-solve reading bug. It doesn't get into huge detail, which made it really useful to me as a beginner, but may not be as useful to those who already know the nuts of linguistics and phonetics.

An excellent volume on teaching phonics. This will be a book that I volition borrow again or add to my library.

I read this book while working on a phonics professional evolution for graduate schoolhouse. I LOVED information technology. I recommend it for every teacher. It was super informative and really walked the reader through evening you needed to know near phonics.
